(Cohen & Cohen, 1992: Durst et al. 1993). Psychiatric illnesses are regarded as complex disorders: disorders which show evidence of gene effect but do not show clear Mendelian patterns of inheritance. Comorbidity of such illneses with other genetic disorders might be of help in understanding their psychopathology. A hy pothetical explanation for the higher incidence of hyperbilirubinaemia and schizophrenia, genetic predisposition, was emphasised by Muller et cd (1991). Further reporting of similar cases to the present study may emphasise the significant comorbidity of Gilbert's syndrome and mental

Prolonged sensory or visceral symptoms: an under-diagnosed form of non-convulsive focal (simple partial) status epilepticus.

Four patients had prolonged, sensory, simple partial seizures (SPS), lasting up to several days, without associated behavioural impairment. In three patients, the SPS often occurred as a prolonged "aura" before a more overt seizure. Descriptions included: "butterflies", rising epigastric sensation; "a thought in the stomach", and an olfactory sensation. Seizure localisation was frontal in one c...

Self-similar fractals and arithmetic dynamics

‎The concept of self-similarity on subsets of algebraic varieties‎ ‎is defined by considering algebraic endomorphisms of the variety‎ ‎as `similarity' maps‎. ‎Self-similar fractals are subsets of algebraic varieties‎ ‎which can be written as a finite and disjoint union of‎ ‎`similar' copies‎. ‎Fractals provide a framework in which‎, ‎one can‎ ‎unite some results and conjectures in Diophantine g...

Fractals in the neurosciences, Part II: clinical applications and future perspectives.

It has been ascertained that the human brain is a complex system studied at multiple scales, from neurons and microcircuits to macronetworks. The brain is characterized by a hierarchical organization that gives rise to its highly topological and functional complexity. Over the last decades, fractal geometry has been shown as a universal tool for the analysis and quantification of the geometric ...

An Analysis of Fractal Properties in the Iranian Exchange Rate Behavior

The behavior of exchange rate in various exchange markets is not seemingly predictable, while there are different forecasting methods to do so. One of these methods is to use fractals to identify exchange rate behavior. This paper has made attempts to explore the properties of fractals in Iran’s exchange market in order to it can predict and analyze the trend of exchange rate. Accordingly, th...
